Broncos Put Ryan Harris on RFA Status

The Denver Broncos place a Restricted Free Agent tender on right tackle Ryan Harris. Broncos may pass on Harris to go the draft route depending on what Harris decides to do. Harris was drafted by the Broncos in the 2007 NFL draft. He spent is college years at Notre Dame.

Star Quarterback John Elway Makes A Comeback

After one of the Denver Broncos’ worst seasons in decades, team owner Pat Bowlen believed it was time for a change. That change was hiring retired football star, John Elway, as the Broncos’ new executive vice president of football operations. This is huge for the team, for Elway was the quarterback for the Denver Broncos from 1984 to 1999. Elway’s greatest contribution to the Broncos was leading them to five Super Bowls and winning two of them, back-to-back in 1998 and 1999. His legacy has since survived and is the reason everyone is so excited to see him return to football and his Broncos.

Elway’s first task as executive vice president of football operations is to find a replacement coach for Josh McDaniels. He already has several possibilities lined up, such as Perry Fewell, defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, and Eric Studesville, interim head coach for the Broncos. Elway is also interested in speaking with Stanford coach, Jim Harbaugh. In order to turn around the Broncos’ next season, his pick is crucial.

Another task facing Elway is whether Tim Tebow will be the starting quarterback next season. Elway decided to leave the decision of Tebow’s position up to the next coach. On the matter of Tebow, Elway said, “Tim Tebow is a darn good football player, what we have to make him is a darn good quarterback, and that is what we have to figure out.”

Elway’s major goal in his new position with the Broncos is to reconnect the team with their fan base. After an abysmal season and the videotaping scandal that depicted the team as cheaters, fans have begun to lose faith in their team. Elway has set bringing back the fans as his main goal.

This next season will see many changes, besides Elway’s hiring. Brian Xanders will be the general manager for the team for another season. Pat Bowlen handed his president position off to Joe Ellis. Elway has expressed interest in bringing Champ Bailey back to the team, but the team’s budget may not be able to cover his cost. With all of these team changes, owner Bowlen and Elway see a bright future for the Denver Broncos, and maybe a Super Bowl run down the road.

Our Champion, Champ Bailey, Contract Slips Away

Bronco's fans are left scratching their heads as Champ Bailey's contract slips away.  So wait a minute, the Denver Broncos dish out millions to draft choices, un-proven and washed up running backs, quarterbacks and other players on offensive and defensive.  So now we tuck our wallet away at the last minute when it comes to our star player.

Whether your a Bronco lover or hater, you'll be hard pressed to find someone to say anything negative about Champ Bailey.  This guy is a leader, both on and off the field.

Now we could keep an open mind and take into consideration that the Broncos have allot to consider.  Do they want to make Champ a safety? are worried about the potential of a lockout next year? or maybe the numbers ($$) just don't jive…  Either way, Champ Bailey is a guy that cannot be replaced! Let's find a way to sign him to a new contract before the season is over.

Mike Shanahan’s Curse on the Broncos

Did Mike Shanahan play a practical joke on the Broncos after his dismissal? It appears that he might have placed a curse on the Denver Broncos Running Backs? Mike probably thought it would be funny hexing his former team, not realizing that he actually wielded such powers. I mean it only makes sense considering Mike is highly favored by the football Gods, especially those Gods who love the backfield.

Let's take a look back in history and see what made Shanahan so special.  Shanahan's blessing begin in 1995 with his 6th round draft pick Terrell Davis. Davis rushed for a 1,100 yards (in1995) and caught 49 passes in his rookie year. Terrell continued to tear it up with 1,500 yards in 96' (AP Offensive Player of the Year), 1,700 yards in 97' (NFL Super Bowl MVP), and then an incredible 2,000 yards in 1998 (AP & PFWA MVP, AP Offensive Player of the Year).   Without Davis, the Broncos Super Bowls wins probably (or definately) would not have happened.  The Terrell Davis era ended abruptly in 1999 with a serious injury.

Although, the Broncos didn't hesitate to hand off the ball to rookie running back Olandis Gary, who turned out to be another blessing from the football gods.  Gary was taken in the fourth round of the NFL draft, a late round draft pick for Mike Shanahan.  Olandis Gary rushed for 1,000 yards in 99',  not bad considering his production came from only12 games that year.

Then another late round draft pick, named Mike Anderson, who took a disciplined approach to the game in 2000, producing over 1,400 yards that year.  Like Terrell Davis, he too was drafted in the 6th round (another late round draft pick).

The following year Shanahan decided he would take Clinton Portis in the NFL draft, but this time it was in the 2nd round.  Clinton Portis made a name for himself  at the University of Miami as their top running back.  Portis helped the Hurricanes win the National Championship in 2001, he rushed for over 1,200 yards, with 10 touchdowns and 220 carries (5.5 average yards per carry). In 2002, Clinton rushed for 1,500 yards and was named NFL offensive rookie of the year by Associated Press. The next year he nearly hit the 1,600 yard mark with 5.5 average yards per carry and attended his first Pro Bowl.   Then, Shanahan traded Clinton Portis to Washington for Pro Bowler and all-star cornerback Champ Bailey.

Knowing that he could pick up talent in the draft, Mike Shanahan was never reluctant to move on to another running back.  Reuben Droughns was the next RB to excel under Shanahan, rushing for 1,240 yards in 2004. Droughns had been with the Broncos since 2002, but didn't play much.  Droughns was not guaranteed a starting position in 05' with the Broncos, so he requested a trade and was subsequently traded to the Cleveland Browns.  Droughns wasn't the last running back under the guidance of coach Shanahan to rush for 1,000 yards.

Mike Anderson makes a comeback after his rookie debut in 2000 and rushed 1,000 yards in 2005. In 2006, Tatum Bell rushed for over 1,000 yards and was close to 1,000 yards in 2005 with 921, not  to mention over 100 yards receiving.

You might be thinking enough already, 1,000 yard running backs are not that hard to come by in the NFL.  This is true,  although Shanahan's knack for picking running backs in the draft and his consistency year after year is notable.  Peyton Hillis is the next running back to watch.  The Broncos drafted Hillis in the 2008 NFL draft, 7th round, 227th overall. McDaniels traded Hillis to the Browns, concerned with how Hillis would fit into McDaniels offensive scheme.  Under McDaniels the Broncos have struggled at the running back position with injuries and lack of success in general. Let's hope Shanahan's practical jokes ends soon, if it hasn't already.

Denver Broncos Sign 3 to Practice Squad

The Denver Broncos increase their practice squad by 3.  Running back Bruce Hall, offensive lineman Jeff Byers and defensive lineman Lionel Dotson will stay with the Broncos via their practice squad.  NFL teams are allowed eight members to their practice squad (aka scout team) in addition to the teams 53 player roster.

The Broncos initially signed Bruce Hall in February of this year, only to end up releasing him to make room for newly acquired Andre Brown. Jeff Byers was released by Pete Carroll who is his former college coach at USC.  Byers is a native of Colorado, born and raised in Loveland.  Lionel Dotson was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2008 NFL draft, taken in the 7th round, 245th overall.

Knowshon might not be a No Show for 1st game

The Broncos thursday night preseason finale will not include Broncos top draft pick Knowshon Moreno, but he’s back at practice. Moreno told reportser that he feels about 80% back to normal and has hopes to play at the Broncos season opener in Jacksonville. The Denver Broncos feel good about their top tailbacks, which include Knowshon, Correll and newly acquired LenDale White. LenDaled showed some enthusiasm against Pittsburgh this past pre-season game, especially now that he’s playing in his hometown. LenDale White will not be playing in the first 4 games of the Broncos regular season due to his substance-abuse violation.

Champ Bailey gives Darrell Revis Serious Props

Champ Bailey gives Darrell Revis serious props and rightfully so.  Recently on 104.3 the fan, a denver radio station, Champ Bailey acknowledges that Revis is currently the more superior Cornerback in the league.  Bailey also agrees, that despite Revis having 3 more years on this contract, he deserves a large pay raise.  Champ admits it’s hard to acknowledge another player is better, but in this case he gives credit where credit is do.  Now, who ends up with the better career still remains to be seen.
