Our Champion, Champ Bailey, Contract Slips Away

Bronco's fans are left scratching their heads as Champ Bailey's contract slips away.  So wait a minute, the Denver Broncos dish out millions to draft choices, un-proven and washed up running backs, quarterbacks and other players on offensive and defensive.  So now we tuck our wallet away at the last minute when it comes to our star player.

Whether your a Bronco lover or hater, you'll be hard pressed to find someone to say anything negative about Champ Bailey.  This guy is a leader, both on and off the field.

Now we could keep an open mind and take into consideration that the Broncos have allot to consider.  Do they want to make Champ a safety? are worried about the potential of a lockout next year? or maybe the numbers ($$) just don't jive…  Either way, Champ Bailey is a guy that cannot be replaced! Let's find a way to sign him to a new contract before the season is over.

Champ Bailey – Tested Again This Weekend Against the Colts

Champ Bailey's foot or ankle injury keeps him from practice today, along with Broncos other cornerback Andre Goodman with an injured right thigh.  Even though Champ has been considered to be a 2nd rate cornerback this season next to Darelle Reavis and Nnamdi Asomough, he still remains a solid cover cornerback in the league.  Many argue that his numbers are low considering the opposing team won't dare pass his direction.  This week against the Colts will be a true test for Bailey, that's if he plays.  Like many coaches Josh McDaniel is being coy, by telling the media that some of the Broncos injured players may be ready for this weekends game (whether they are or not, nobody knows).  Manning is sure to test Champ Baileys skills and the Broncos defense in general.  Bailey knows this and don't be surprised to see him prove himself again as an All-Star cornerback.

Champ Bailey gives Darrell Revis Serious Props

Champ Bailey gives Darrell Revis serious props and rightfully so.  Recently on 104.3 the fan, a denver radio station, Champ Bailey acknowledges that Revis is currently the more superior Cornerback in the league.  Bailey also agrees, that despite Revis having 3 more years on this contract, he deserves a large pay raise.  Champ admits it’s hard to acknowledge another player is better, but in this case he gives credit where credit is do.  Now, who ends up with the better career still remains to be seen.

Champ Bailey Bio (Cont) – College years and NFL Draft

College Career (Champ Bailey Bio)
While at the University of Georgia, Champ had a very promising career. In the three years that he spent at college, he played a total of 33 games. His first two years were alongside his older brother Ronald Bailey and his last year with his younger brother Boss.

As a freshman in 1996, Champ played mostly on special teams and as a defensive back. It was in 1997 that began making his name as a shut down cornerback. He intercepted several passes and returned one for a touchdown that year. The same year the Bulldogs finished 9-2, much better than their 5-6 record the previous year.

In 97, Champ Bailey played alongside Hines Ward, Olandis Gary, Robert Edwards (who later rushed 1,100 yards for the patriots before blowing out his knee) and lineman Matt Stinchcomb (Lead the nation as blocker in college, later nicknamed stinkbomb when playing for the raiders). The Bulldogs had great showing in the Outback Bowl, winning against Wisconsin 33-6. QB Mike Bobo completed 26 of 28 passes leading the team to their 10th win for the season. Their 10-2 record was the best the team had seen since 1992.

Allot of the stars from the 97’ season graduated and Coach Donnan was facing a challenging season. Donnan put freshman Quincy Carter at starting quarterback position. Carter and Bailey worked well connecting with quick screen passes that Champ took advantage of by following the tight end down the field.

Defensively, Champ played very well and was credited for being able to play both sides of the ball, which was becoming less and less common in college football. Champ Bailey was voted first-team all-Sec and an All-American for the year. This was for good reason; Bailey had 47 catches and 5 touchdowns on offense, not to mention his 3 interceptions on defense.

Champ also had three 100 yard receiving games against Wyoming, Vanderbilt and LSU. Bailey performed very well in the Peach Bowl, his three receptions totaled 73 yards and one touchdown. But his offensive accomplishments aren’t the only thing that stood out; he was also named defensive MVP.

Bailey NFL Draft

College football analysts labeled Bailey “NFL Caliber” and Champ agreed throwing his hat into the 1999 draft. As mentioned in our previous article, ESPN offered to fly Champ Bailey out to New York City and attend the NFL draft live, all expenses paid. Instead, Bailey wanted to experience the draft with his friends, family and hometown. He watched the draft from Folkston, Georgia, where the whole town watched in anticipation. In 1999, Champ Bailey was drafted by the Washington Redskins. Bailey obtained a five year, $12 million contract, heading out in the right direction, playing cornerback and being extremely successful at it.

In 2004, Bailey moved to the Denver Broncos, where he continues to play presently. Champ Bailey has been quite successful, adding a string of achievements as well to his career.  As a professional athlete, Champ Bailey has earned the reputation of being extremely consistent, a feat that is tough to achieve. In fact, the kind of honors that he has to his name is difficult to match by others, and continue to be essentially something that many athletes aspire to be.

In the meanwhile, one can say that Champ Bailey is a valuable asset to the Denver Broncos and has contributed significantly to their success. In fact, the kind of records that Bailey has set for this team and difficult to match by any measure.

Champ Bailey in his Early Years

Champ Bailey Bio (in His Early Years)
One of the most revered defensive players in NFL today would have to be Champ Bailey. Often considered to be amongst the best (if not the best) NFL cornerbacks in the league, Bailey always put forth a solid effort and is known to cover half the football field by himself.
There is a lot to this professional football player that people don’t know about. Since his early years, he has always shown potential as a top player, which is why he got drafted in 1999 by the Redskins. Knowing a little about his upbringing might help in understanding more about the person that he is and how he got to where he is now.
Champs Family and Hometown
Many Broncos fans have heard of Champ and Boss Bailey, one of the few brother combos to play for the Denver Broncos. The last time two brothers played on the same side of the ball for the Broncos was in 1992 with Doug and Dave Widell. The Bailey brothers’ story is similar to the Manning story with Eli and Peyton. Similar to the Manning’s, the Bailey brothers also have an older brother that is a highly respected football player. The older Bailey brother, Ron Bailey, was a two year starting cornerback at the University of Georgia. He also played for NFL Europe representing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ until his career ending foot injury. Both Boss and Champ credit their older brother Ron for his discipline, ethics and success driven attitude. Champ has mentioned several times that Ron has been very influential to Champs success, in addition to his parents’ guidance. Elaine (Mom) Bailey said that all Ron talked about was how to get to the “next level”, whether it was sports, education or career (inspiring his two younger brothers). The Bailey brothers are well respected in their hometown community, of course by playing great football, but also were good students.  Continued tomorrow..

Champ Bailey Top Coverman in NFL

Brandon Marshall makes comments noted by the Miami Herald to prod Jets cornerback Darrell Revis.  Stating that Champ Bailey is still the best coverman in the league.  Marshall sure likes to stir the pot.  Bailey will reportedly make 9.5 million in the final year of his contract this year.

Without Brandon Marshall, Who do the Broncos do to for Receiving?

Josh McDaniel's will choose from Jabar Gaffney (9 year pro, who played 2nd to Marshall last year), Brandon Stokely, Eddie Royal, Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas.  Jabar is on the forefront of the pack, mainly because of his experience and success last year.  Broncos rookies have potential, but camp will show who can prove themselves a true candidate.
